LGL Limited

Established in 1971, we are an employee-owned environmental research and consulting firm serving clients in Canada, the USA, and internationally. LGL’s client base spans industry, government, Indigenous groups, public corporations, academia, and non-governmental organizations.

LGL has a long history of working in the Canadian and USA offshore providing scientifically rigorous services in the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors. We have prepared hundreds of environmental assessment and technical review documents for industry projects in the offshore and nearshore waters of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia (as well as British Columbia and the Arctic) with focus on potential effects on marine fauna but also socio-economic analyses. Most recently, we have been providing permitting and environmental monitoring services for several offshore wind developments in the northeastern USA.

LGL provides considerable expertise on the effects of underwater noise (e.g., geophysical surveys, pile driving) on marine mammals, sea turtles, fish, and invertebrates. Furthermore, our biologists have designed and implemented studies examining seabird attraction to light and interactions with offshore infrastructure. We employ radar, Infra-red, acoustic, and visual (vessel-based; drone, fixed-wing aircraft, & helicopter) monitoring techniques in baseline surveys and effects monitoring programs. Our marine biologists are well-recognized for their expertise in designing and implementing benthic surveys (via ROV and drop camera) that adhere to regulatory requirements of the C-NLOER/CNSOER and those under the Fisheries Act. As an employee-owned company, we take pride in providing high-quality work for our clients—regularly publishing our findings in the peer-reviewed scientific literature (see https://lgl.com/publications/).

LGL is very effective at building and managing project teams involving discipline specialists from industry, other consulting firms, Indigenous groups, and academia. We ensure that environmental considerations and permitting requirements are addressed in a practical and cost-effective manner.
